Portals

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

I’m temporarily back in portal land, compiling an existing portlet against a later, much refactored, version of the business tier and life is good. As opposed to a certain dual database project which I hate with a passion.

Derby

Thursday, December 15th, 2005

The last couple of weeks I’ve started playing with Derby and DdlUtils at home, partly because I want an application I’m writing to have a database and partly because we are going to be using Derby at work and it always helps to have some advance knowledge.

XSD from DTD and XML

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

Spent the evening creating an XSD for one of our XML files and found Hit Software’s XML utilities and XSD schema validator to be ace.

TiddlyWiki

I’ve been using TiddlyWiki to keep working notes whilst installing Plumtree and it really is very good.

Plumtree

Monday, October 24th, 2005

Of course I never did install a portlet since I mucked up the database install, so I’m going back to a backup virtual hardrive and starting again.

Plumtree Portal

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

I spent yesterday trying to install plumtree on my work PC and gave up. I have spent today installing Plumtree Portal to run against supplied Tomcat on Windows 2000 Server all running inside a Microsoft Virtual PC. It should have taken half a day I reckon, but I made some errors which I’ll preserve for posterity.

  1. I gave the wrong user details for running the automation server
  2. I got the Host and SID muddled up when supplying database details
  3. I forgot to give the correct ports for the imageserver and got no images

Nevermind the best way to learn is by your mistakes, or so I have heard. I feel decidedly less frustrated today than yesterday. Tomorrow I’ve just got to install a portlet on it, which is nice.

Exo and Plumtree Portal

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

Couple of hours this morning installing Exo portal which installed out of the box with no problems.

I spent the afternoon trying to install Plumtree, helped by one local and a remarkably patient Russian associate (via Skype and WebEx), and it has been exceedingly frustrating - for some reason one of the three services it installs will not startup and at the moment I want to defenestrate my PC.

Plumtree Portal

Tried to follow the instructions for installing Plumtree and failed. 110 pages of installation guide I think I need help.

Aaaargh! Or I hate cookies

Friday, September 9th, 2005

Just spent all afternoon trying to set up a web project in my IDE. Set it up easily enough but everytime I tried to login BLAM NullPointerException so go into debug mode. Takes the afternoon to figure out that it is because I develop with cookies turned off and someone has forgotten to add URL rewriting, so it’s nothing I’ve done but guess who’ll have to fix it? Can I have my afternoon back please?
