Walsall Mayor dies in night of Zeppelin terror

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

Whilst doing the ironing[1] on Sunday afternoon I watched an episode of the Ian Hislop fronted series ‘Not Forgotten’ on More4 and found out about the zeppelin bombing raid on Walsall. I’ve asked Ruth about it and it turns out she had never heard about it which strikes me as odd, although the event was a relatively minor part of the war I’d have thought informing pupils about the local impact would have been a very good idea. I never knew about zeppelin raids in WWI and I’m now intrigued if any happened anywhere I used to live.

Landmark M6 artwork is scrapped

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

I’m glad to see sanity prevailing:

Plans to build a landmark piece of art spanning the M6 in the Black Country have been scrapped after an £18m lottery bid was turned down.

I might have felt differently, if it had been something interesting like the angel of the north (which only cost £1m ten years ago), but fundamentally the plan was for a big shiny steel ring - I don’t think people would have been wowed they’d just have gone ‘huh?’.
