Monopoly Here & Now UK Edition

GaZ posted on the Birmingham metroblog about the vote Hasbro are holding for the Monopoly Here & Now UK Edition judging by the results so far I’d say the vote is a pretty poor idea and here is a list of places (based on census data - and some fudging for Northern Ireland and Wales) I’d like to see instead:

  1. Belfast
  2. Birmingham
  3. Bradford
  4. Bristol
  5. Cardiff
  6. Coventry
  7. Derry
  8. Edinburgh
  9. Glasgow
  10. Greater London
  11. Kingston upon Hull
  12. Leeds
  13. Leicester
  14. Liverpool
  15. Manchester
  16. Nottingham
  17. Plymouth
  18. Sheffield
  19. Southampton
  20. Stoke-on-Trent
  21. Swansea
  22. Wolverhampton

I must disagree: I’ve been to Stoke-on-Trent and think it’s more deserving of 22nd place (Old Kent Road). Bizarrely, I see that that place is currently occupied by Bath.

Oh, hang on, your list’s in alphabetical order.

Well I didn’t exactly want to decide the positions. If you look at a map of the positions of London Monopoly properties they are definitely grouped. Having thought about it, on size grounds I’d have Birmingham and London in the Park Lane and Mayfair positions, Belfast and Derry in the Whitechapel and Old Kent Road positions, I’d throw in another Scottish (Aberdeen?) and Welsh (Bangor?) town/city and group the rest into threes - doing away with a couple of English towns.

I think I’d go for something a bit like this - the order and colouring don’t mean anything.

Hmmm… Liverpool, Manchester and Stoke-on-Trent. The streets in Monopoly are grouped not only geographically but also by prosperity, hence East London not doing so well. Now, Stoke-on-Trent really doesn’t seem to fit with those two other fine cities.

Yes, that dawned on me soon after posting, but seeing as I’m never going to get the chance to play this version (unless I resort to the Blue Peter option) I didn’t want to put in too much effort. Anyway I’ve done some shuffling now:

    Dark Blue:
    Birmingham/London
    Green:
    Manchester/Liverpool/Leeds
    Yellow:
    Scotland
    Red:
    Newcastle/Sheffield/Nottingham
    Orange:
    Bristol/Plymouth/Portsmouth
    Pink:
    Wales
    Light Blue:
    Stoke/Leicester/Hull
    Brown:
    Northern Ireland
